In our profiles on these forums it has the word "referrals" followed by a number. On my profile it says that I have had two referrals.

To my knowledge I haven't referred anyone to the site. (at least not anyone who took my up on it). What the hell else could it be then?

Didn't even catch my horrible grammatical error there... (Inside joke to the rest of you!)

Well, this is the "What the fuck is this referrals thing all about?!" thread, so it didn't seem like the right place to bring it up. Besides, forums are pretty much fair game as long as no one starts typing in 1337 or chat-type.

Not that I won't talk shit in a thread about a contest or anything, mind you.

I was totally going to point out the hypocritical nature of your argument until I read that last line. You totally pointed it out for me... Although I totally agree about 1337.... STUPIDEST SHIT EVER. Anubis came out typing that on the other forum and I kicked his ass.... Uh... Verbally.

"leet" They use numbers in place of letters because they are "1337 h4x0rz" (elite hackers). It's a pain in the ass.

It makes you want to puke and laugh at the same time. Deadly combo.

It does have humble beginnings. Older-generation hackers used to speak in leet because they were convinced the government was logging all internet activity and searching through for certain words.

I agree that now it has gotten to a pathetic level. Every 12 year old and his dog uses 1337 despite the fact that 1337's purpose has died. For some people it actually makes them feel skilled. One extreme case of this is when a user at milw0rm's forums paraded how awesome he was for making a simple program that translated "words" into "\/\/()R|)S".

How does the site know you convince anyone to join it though? I figured if you got referals you had some input. (Or the people you convinced gave you a bump on the stat at least)
