First of all, this stupid computer at the library wont let me respond to the "movie" thread ya'll have going, so I'll put in my two cents here.
Okay, as far as movies go. Pan's Labyrinth was horrible. I hated it. Some nice special effects, but I couln't understand where the movie was going. At all. Dull, really. If you were still staring at the credits in awe then it's probably because you are very stupid.
Okay, that was uncalled for. Sorry.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America was great. My favorite line in the movie, "Although Kazakstan is glorious nation, we face many modern problems - social, economic, and Jew."
The Simpsons movie was pretty funny. Unfortunately, the drunken friend who accompanied me wouldn't shut up, so I was forced to walk out halfway through. Plus it was opening night and I was forced to sit in the front row. SPOILER: You finally get a good look at Bart's penis. About time.
Turistas was alright. By the end I was tired, though.
"Alcohol with movies does not produce the same effect as pot with movies, or certain movies at least. Have I mentioned this before? Some movies actually have a whole SUBPLOT that can only be ascertained through the influence of marijuana. A couple good examples are Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle and Orgazmo. I swear there is actually a whole new MEANING to those films if your brain is set to the correct potarameters." -Ves
Well, marijuana doesn't quite do it for me. But with Mushrooms, yes, there are some crazy subplots I've uncovered. It's really not something that can be understood unless you've been there and done that.
Okay, now for TV shows:
There's some pretty interesting ones lately, especially if you have HBO and Showtime.
Among my favorites: Weeds and Dexter on Showtime. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Da Ali G Show, on HBO. The Boondocks on cartoon network is great. South Park and Sara Silverman on Comedy Central.
And I'm afraid I must admit that I'm an avid watcher of Top Chef on Bravo. And let's not forget the Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman marathon on Lifetime this Sunday. I know DEP and I are really looking forward to that.
Anyone seen that new Star Trek show, though? I saw the opening credits and was completely put off by the guitar music. So UNTREK like.

There’s a new Star Trek series? Since when?
Unless you’re talking about “Enterprise” and you’re watching it in reruns because that’s been canceled since 2005. It’s the only series I can think of that has the same crappy intro music that you’re talking about.
Yeah Enterprise was sort of disappointing, but the final season episodes of it were probably better than most of Voyager’s episodes during its entire 7 season run.

Oh, and Dr. Quinn medicine woman marathon?! Holy shit!!!! I'll be clearing my schedule for sunday.

Pssh! Screw Dr. Quinn. Golden Girls is the only thing worth watching on Lifetime. Err...no, wait...
Yeah, The Boondocks is pretty much the best thing on Adult Swim right now. Though, considering the vapid amounts of shit that is on AS right now, that's not as much of a compliment as it should be. Futurama and Family Guy have been around so long I no longer consider them a part of AS- and everything else sucks.
Top Chef is like any makeover program on TLC, or pretty much anything on Discovery or the History Channel- it's really fun to watch when you're flipping through the channels, and you decide watch it out of boredom...but as far as actually sitting down to watch it...it's just not that good. The only exception is Mythbusters. Holy crap- Mythbusters is amazing.
And, I have to say, when I'm too damn lazy to get off the couch in the afternoon, there's nothing like a good episode of M*A*S*H on Hallmark.

Dexter is a pretty awesome show, the second season is starting to get really juicy.
I still enjoy House,MD.even though the formula is old and predictable.
Criminal Intent has lost its vigor as all the characters are gettin fat right before your eyes, but for some reason I still TiVo it.
...And I think every one should eat some shrooms at least once a year for spring cleaning purposes.

Weeds, Californication, South Park, Nip Tuck, and other things if they are on and I feel like I want to procrastinate work.
When I'm drunk, I'll watch anything that is remotely amusing and find it to be hilarious.
I also catch the news occasionally, (anything but Fox) and like to watch the stock market channel.
Ooohhh, Myth Busters is enjoyable as well.

I'm all about Heroes, Dexter, Lost, Kid Nation, Survivor, Weeds, Californication, The Simpsons, and reruns of Taxi, The Muppet Show, SNL, Quantim Leap, and a few others.
Speaking specifically of Heroes, I have a few thoughts... The cheerleader who heals from any wound, people accross the nation rejoiced when she hit 18, probably hoping for some nude photos, but there is much more to be joyace about. The girl heals from ANYTHING. You know what that means, right? Her hymen will heal itself. Virgin pussy forever. (actually, that sounds like a good band name)
Also, that new chick that showed up... that little kids cousin or whatever... She can do anything she see's someone else do, whether in person or on TV. That bitch needs to start watching some porn so she can get rid of the gag reflex and learn some of the more complex positions.

I just started watching Dexter and it is a really good show. I recommend it strongly, it is nice to see a serial killer as a protagonist.
And, though this thread is outdated, to reply to DEP, that would get really fucking messy. I'd hate to have to clean my sheets every time I have sex with a girl.

After the initial withdrawals, you'll find you're much happier and healthier.
It's like beating an addiction. Just another addiction.
Take up another hobby. Try running. Try painting. Try spending more time with the kids.
As someone who is in the middle of a fierce battle with MYSELF, I can tell you that cutting off one addiction and replacing it with something healthy is a life savor.
If I didn't have my running right now I don't know what I would do.

Books are for old people. Hurray for illiteracy.
I recently had an experience with the act of removing virginity from a willing female participant. I wasn't really expecting it and when I finished I turned on the nights and noticed their was blood all over the place, on my hands, on me, on her, on the sheets, on the pillow. It looked like I had just freaking murdered someone.
I mean, I certainly don't regret it in the least bit. Overall it was a wonderful night. I'm just saying, that whole thing is a bit overrated.

Ahhh yes, American Gladiator is epic. I loved when that military chick swam full speed into a metal pole and had to do the rest of the eliminator bleeding out of her head.
I just wish that the Gladiators were allowed to take of their kid gloves with the participants and really give them a beating. It would be funny to see the wolf actually tear apart one of those arrogant scrawny contestants who talks shit to him.
Also, why don't they have gladiators as part of the eliminator anymore? Wouldn't it be sweet if after they climb to the top of that thing and right before they walk through the wall a gladiator just walks up and pushes them down the incline laughing the entire time?

That messy Apoth? Ew. Most girls don't have a cherry that pops like that. I mean, it's supposed to be really rare, and in all the "girl talk" I've come across most just have a LITTLE blood... are you sure she wasn't on the rag?
As for TV, I'm all for getting rid of TV, I think it would be great if the seasons went straight to DVD... oh wait, are you suggesting they get rid of that too? I can't stand behind that sir. I love my addictions.
I wish I could go for a run... or even a walk... I think if I were to wander down the street I would have to run... but you can't outrun a bullet so I'd probably end up in a gutter. Man I live in the GHET-TO. Maybe I'll just watch the gladiators work out instead. It's really great DEP?

I don't know. My wife doesn't dig on it, but I fucking love it. Maybe it's a guy thing, though...
If you need some serious good shows to watch that there are plenty of episodes to view; I have a few recommendations.
First of all is LOST. I know there's a bunch of hype around it and a lot of preppy assholes watch it and discuss it; but there's a reason for all the hype. It's a solid show. You must start from the beginning or you won't understand much of what's going on. There are 3 seasons out on DVD already. 4th season starts at the end of this month.
Next up is Heroes. Again, a lot of hype around it but it's solid. You don't have to see the first season to understand everything, but it helps and the first season was fucking awesome so it's worth it.
Dexter. Dexter works forensics, specializes in blood splatter analysis. He's also a serial killer. Two seasons are out there; I'd recommend seeing all of the episodes in order, but it may not be necessary to enjoy the show.
Weeds. Great comedy/drama. Woman's husband dies, she starts selling weed to keep her family floating. I want to say there are four seasons of this.
Rescue Me. New York City firefighters dealing with post traumatic stress from 911. The protagonist has ghosts who follow him, a few firefighters, a little girl with a cat, and some others who show up off and on. The writing is fantastic.
There are probably others that I'm missing, but I've been drinking and can't remember all of them.
Other than Rescue me, all of the shows I mentioned can be found here ("http://watchtvsitcoms.com/tvshows.php)

Getting rid of TV really wouldn't do much, everyone would just hang out on the internet more than they do now. In fact I'd say the internet is more addictive than TV right now.
Anyway, I like The Shield. I never watched it before until last year when I started catching most of the past seasons in reruns.
That happens with me quite a bit though. There will be a show that's been on for a bunch of seasons that I didn't even really have any interest in (or even know about sometimes) and then I'll suddenly catch a rerun of it. If I really like it a lot, I'll basically just catch up by religiously watching the reruns when they come on.

Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson.
Nuff said.
HBO's John Adams series was brilliant. For so many reasons. Not the least of which was the casting.
Thomas Jefferson was a complicated, awkward man.
As were the rest of them.
What a disservice we do to ourselves by not studying TRUE history.
Kudos to HBO. As soon as the series comes out on DVD I will be buying my mom, who doesn't have HBO, a copy of it.

Cool. It isn't a 'rosy picture' HBO paints. But a work of art, in a way.
My favorite part is when Ben, Thomas, and John are all together in France. Hilarity ensues. The 'upperclass' of French society were fucking hilarious in this era, and despised by all. This was right before the BRUTAL French revolution.
Ben Franklin was a total horn dog who fit in perfectly in Versailles. Jefferson was a hopeless idealist, though he too was somewhat taken in by the splendor of Paris. And Adams was just plain stubborn and COMPLETELY out of place.
I find ALL history interesting, though. Like you said. It's just that we're fed a filtered version of our own history by our public education system and popular media and it's nice to see a non-PC, non-biased presentation like what HBO has done here.
I also enjoyed seeing the last years of John Adams life, when only he and Jefferson (who had become enemies later on in their careers) were the remaining survivors of '76, and they rekindle their old friendship through a series of letters.
They both lived to ripe old ages, given the time in which they lived. What a strange and completely alien era. Yet somehow very relative to our own 'modern' lives.
EDIT: EDIT: Also, it should be mentioned that both Adams and Jefferson die on the EXACT same day. That day being the 50th anniversary of the ratification the declaration of independence. Which Jefferson wrote at Adam's behest. And which both Franklin and Adams helped Jefferson 'edit'.

That's nice, Leblanc.
*Throws something shiny to divert his attention*
It should be clarified, however, that I think John Adams WAS a vain man. Like 95% of humanity.
Though remarkable, truly. He spoke his mind ALWAYS. Maybe to a fault, maybe not. He was a work-a-holic, and his family suffered because of this. Although honor bound, he did not have the fortitude to address the slavery issue of which, as a northerner, he adamantly opposed.
He was human. As all of our founders were.
Just as we are.
The series one fault in my mind is it's FAST pace, rushing through 50 years of history in 8 episodes. I wish it could have been a two season series.
Oh well.

This season has been far more dependent on the viewer having knowledge of some large event, item, or meme outside of the show than any other season has been so far. For those who are interested in or aware of these things the season has been extra funny. For those that don't, they loose out on some things and it seems more flat.
Overall I think the show has been floundering for years, but this season has picked up a lot... but it is still not what it once was.

It dosn't shock any more... the Simpsons had the same problem. South Park's Shock factor was one of it's major selling points.

I thought South Park was funny even without the shock value actually. I prefer the fact that they actually have a storyline and an attempt at continuous character development.
That's pretty much why I find Family Guy to be highly overrated. Sure it's funny, but it's basically a bunch of randomness trying to shock people. The characters aren't even really likable. I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer American Dad to Family Guy since it doesn't rely on random clips every 2 seconds. The characters are better in it as well (At least to me they are)

Family Guy is much loved and much hated.
There are two characters I love: Brian & Stewie.
Brian the dog especially. MOST shows, not just Famil Guy, are hit and miss and overrated and WHATEVER. My favorite episode is Road to Rhode Island.
I don't follow the bandwagon. I watch Family Guy...I watch fucking stupid asshole O'Reilly. I watch Colbert. I watch Dobbs. I watch Bill Maher. I watch South Park and John Adams and Mythbusters and History channels the Universe and Public Access and Chimp Eden on Animal Planet.
I even watch How Its Made and Deadliest Catch on Discovery.
Don't forget Seinfeld on TBS.

I love how It's Made and a lot of things on Discovery Channel... Boom-de-aughta Boom-de-aughta Boom-de-aughta Boom-de-aughta ...

Talk about overrated. That show was funny for about three or four seasons and then became the Whiny Jew Show that just repeated themes over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... ad nauseum. One or two quality episodes a year does not a good show make.

I'm not big on comedy series in general. I really liked Frasier and Becker, though, and I have a sort of love/hate relationship with Boston Legal, even though it's let me down often since the first season. I remember liking Arrested Development awhile back.

Becker was underrated and funny.
Fraiser was generally funny, but it got annoying when they had tons of episodes concentrating on his brother and the British chick.

Arrested Developement is surprisingly funny, but it's definitely a smarter humor, and was therefore taken off reasonably quickly. At least there's still The Office.
Robot Chicken is hit or miss. You either love or hate the style- you'll know where you stand after two-three episodes. It's not a show that can grow on anybody. There are no shades of grey with Robot Chicken.
Though, it's on Adult Swim, which means you have to watch the 95% shit filler that's on with it. Robot Chicken and The Boondocks. That's it. Any Family Guy on AS is better on other networks.

Actually, I really liked the Niles/Daphne relationship. It's true it moved at a glacial pace for a good portion of the show before suddenly blossoming, but there were a lot of genuinely sweet moments in there. Put another way, I'd rather have a story told, in multi-episode arcs if not over the entire course of a show, and I'd rather see some development in the overall plot than a half-hour of comparatively empty-calorie laughs; when the relationship failed to advance the show in that respect it at least provided an essential sobering effect, a relief from the comedy. I like what I see to mean something, and therein I often found my meaning.
It's a big reason I liked Frasier; it could be powerful and bittersweet and romantic when it was finished making me laugh. Few other comedies seem to do that with as much success. It helped, I suppose, that I actually liked the situations, the contexts in which the humor happened, and that the show rarely resorted to really low-brow humor, which I nearly always detest.
The promise of continuity and the sheer scale of the plot made me want to fall in love with Andromeda. It never happened; the show was more episodic in some ways than I liked from the beginning anyway, and by the time Kevin Sorbo got around to cobbling small pieces of civilization back together, he'd also gotten rid of the writer and taken a firmer hand with the show. Inconsistencies in the overarching plot grew; the series became more episodic and even more Sorbo-centric. Well, the last season was a little better in that respect, but compensated by eliminating most of the other stuff I actually liked. Funnily enough, I usually find myself disliking, for one reason or another, shows that do try to be less episodic; Battlestar and (forgive me for even mentioning it) Lost are among them.

Andromeda had a lot of potential. The premise of a chaotic galactic dark age was cool, in a way it reminded me of Star Trek (Not surprising I suppose given that it was a Roddenberry concept) , but taking place during a time long after the Federation had fallen. The Nietzscheans even reminded me of "The Eugenics Wars" taken to outer space.
But yeah they started screwing it up when they stopped focusing on rebuilding the Commonwealth. The rebuilding process was WAY too short for something that collapsed so long ago and I always felt like they should've been focusing mostly on that aspect, because they made it a major theme for the first part of the show, but then later they just sort of threw it out the window and said "Oh yeah, the Commonwealth is reunited and the Magog still eat everyone anyway, let's focus on Sorbo some more instead."
They also they had some crappy cast changes. I pretty much stopped watching when Tyr left.
