Everytime I get frustrated and think about how much easier it would be to just go into business, something always draws me back to science. It's not as profitable but it is certainly more altruistic. Humanity is on the brink of destruction, but at the same time, we are sitting on a massive hoard of untapped potential. I think we are coming closer and closer to tapping it. The only obstacle is corrupt morals.
I saw this article and it suddenly made me feel like I should actually study for my biology exam this weekend. I need to learn this material, I need to major and get a PhD in biology so I can be on the cutting edge along with these people.

Mice today, humans tomorrow. The leap really isn't that great, our genetics work the same way. Evolution is no longer a slow random naturally occurring process, it is in our hands. We will soon be able to accelerate human evolution in any direction we want. The possibilities are endless. With a little foresight, we could tap into a solution to so many of humanities problems. There are many who are fearful of genetic manipulation, but these people always exist. These were the same people who would have condemned Aristotle or Da Vinci or Einstein. Science will prevail though, as always.
Yay Science!

Mice today, tomorrow the world. The leap really isn't impossible, our genetics work the same way. Evolution is no longer a slow random naturally occurring process; it is within our power to manipulate it. We will soon be able to accelerate human evolution in any direction we desire. The possibilities are endless. With a little courage, we could tap into a final solution to so many of humanity’s weaknesses. There are many who are fearful of genetic manipulation, but these people will be silenced. These were the same fools who lacked the vision of Herophilos or Shiro Ishii or Josef Mengele. Science will always prevail though, it is inevitable.
Just thought the end really needed a mad scientist feel to it.

Actually, some of the most highly paid people in the US are in the sciences. In fact, mix engineering into that with science and we can say MOST of the highest paid professions are included. The difference is that their are fewer available spots in these professions when comparing them to the more generic business ones. In fact, Astronomy has some of the most highly paid people in it, and last I checked it was a science.

Drag, CEO's make millions upon millions. Any scientist brings home a fraction of that. High profile lawyers make much more than any scientist as well. As do people who are very successful in the stock market.

Yeah, but being a business CEO or stock market guy seems incredibly dull. And we don’t need anymore fucking lawyers; we got too many as it is.
Be a scientist. It at least sounds more interesting.

Median annual salaries by career (from a recent article I read about what college career courses to take).
Doctor: $156K (obviously going to be the big bucks)
Astronomer: $97K
Lawyer: $95K
Physicist: $87K
Biochemist/Biophysicist: $69K
Microbiologist: $55K
Then there was the list of what mid-career scientists make if go the industrial route instead of the academic route. So if you "sell out" you make a lot more.
Toxicology: $105K Industrial and only $78K Academia
Biochemistry: $98K Industrial and only $63K Academia
Neuroscience: $100K Industrial and only $66K Academia
Bioinformatics: $103K Industrial and only $65K Academia
Immunology: $96K Industrial and only $54K Academia
There is a lot of money in science. You just have to be good and get into the right sciences. Plus, if you are willing to work for "the man" you cam make a killing.

I'm not talking about median salaries, I'm talking more about the upper limits. There is decent money in science, but if you want to be really wealthy, it is just not the right career path (unless you combine it with business).

Yeah, so you if you want to get out there and risk it to fight for one of those ever so rare TOP few positions there is more money in business (or movies, or sports, or law)... but going into business thinking you are going to get one of those is just plain stupid. The odds are you will go into business and end up in one of those median positions or less... so play the odds and get into science where that will get you far more.

Who fucking cares? Have you seen the pictures of the receding polar ice caps? I mean, even within the last few years?
We're fucked. Go rob a bank, have lots of sex, and do lots of drugs. Fuck a career.
I mean, that's what I'm doing - and you can see how well it's working out for me! Except for the sex part. And the robbing the bank part - as that takes balls. And I have no good drug hook-ups.
Damn.
Anybody here got a 1/2 oz.?
Not weed, DEP, I meant coke. Dumb ass, sit down.

Fuck the ice caps. If you're gonna give a convincing Apocalypse arguement, use the fact that the Mayan Calendar and many other, more vague prophecies have the world ending sometime in December 2012.

The world is not gonna end. Though I do thoroughly believe that humanity will one day be overtaken by AI.

I never said that it would. But I'd believe hokey prophecies more than I would believe Global Warming has a spontaneous, immediate affect on our world. Though, I have to say...I'm thinking we'll all blow the shit out of each other before we get run over by AI. Maybe some of humanity will survive, but most of us would probably bit it.
