Hi guys - I'm letting new users start posting again without me approving them. Someone already reported a post by a spambot. If it's not too much trouble, please continue doing that and I will try to keep up with deleting the threads and banning the user account.

Thanks

The really bad one is MumakilReenly. The entire Off-Topic is flooded with a bunch of Russian writing.

WatchMovieonz is another one that spammed quite a bit.

Other possible spambots are:

Jostuth09 (Nonsensical post, suspicious profile)
vumbeld09 (Nonsensical post, suspicious profile)
daxQuame (Nonsensical post, suspicious profile)
LoraHup (Nonsensical posts, suspicious profile)
Markusenel (Selling keychains)

End knows where it's at.

:)

A guy (or gal) called "Username" is another possibility (I think he/she's only posted once, but the post seemed somewhat out-of-whack with the topic).

donteatpoop
12-08-2009, 11:49 PM
No, Username0 is legit. He's a CYS user as well, but goes by a different name

An easy way to tell is (aside from spotting links in their posts) to check if they're making sense when they type or just babbling out random nonsense.

Speaking of which, I think ChubbyTeletubby may be a spambot.

Ryan_DuBois
12-09-2009, 01:46 PM
You're thinking of Urnam0, DEP.

:)

The person I'm talking about about is actually named "Username" (without the zero). As for how much sense he makes:

":D I thought it was a pretty cool thing. Dont think I was that good at it though"

It almost seems okay, given the context of that thread, but still might be worth looking into.

And yes, Chubby is almost certainly a spambot.

Good porn or just 'meh' porn?

Locke
12-18-2009, 07:42 PM
Well, it claims to be Swedish porn, which I suppose is a technical point in its favor, and neither party in the sample image is bad-looking, so assuming the website is genuine, you could do worse. As spammers go, I like to think those here at IS are a cut above many of the others on the Web. Several have actually made apparent attempts to appear legitimate on the forums, which, while illiterate, confusing, and ineffective at best, are nonetheless evidence of involvement and effort and are at least somewhat amusing. On the other hand, the pornspam could've been targeted better. He sent it to myself, Apoth, Shabti, Ves, and Xnull.

Goodfriend and his transparent attempts to infect my computer and sell me something are getting on my last nerve. The fact that he won't stop trumpeting our alleged friendship during all this is particularly annoying. I find it hard to believe people actually fall for this stuff; I guess he has to spam as much as he does to stand any chance of making money from this ridiculousness. Spammers, please, at least try to make it believable. You're better than this.

EDIT: I tried to send my good friend some much-needed advice, but he's apparently filled up his own inbox and can't receive it.

When I returned from my break from CYS, I got about 25 PMs mostly asking about Xburner or whatever it's called & fake anti-virus crap. Most of the spam came from GoodFriend AKA Not-so-good friend I don't know.

SERIOUSLY! Do something about this! This is not good for anybody here!

I think you should ban more than the spambot accounts but also ban users & bots from using "admin" in their usernames to help lower the numbers of admin impersonations from these spambots as well as ban the IP addresses belonging to the bots.

These suggestions should help fight forum spam.

Usoki
01-31-2010, 11:39 PM
Oh, is that what we need to do? Good thing you're so smart. It's a good thing all spam bots only have one, static IP address.

And, while we're at it, let's take the "allow spam bots" switch, and flip it to "off". Because, you know, it totally exists, and we can totally do that. We wouldnt' have spam bots if we didn't want them. We just like the thrill of battle.

Isn't it funny how spambots work? This one almost looks human, but you can tell that it's not. The strategically placed typos follow too much of a pattern to be a result of human error. And the sentences are generic- they seem to be on topic because they don't actually say anything at all.

Still, Mega can't be a very good spambot, given how quickly we blew his cover.

While I cannot help but agree that Ryan is trolling the fuck out of you...

By lying and calling him a spambot?

The reason I find this whole thing amusing is that nobody has really said anything offensive (except Megaman); hell, several people made jokes about Chubby being a bot months ago and he just took it in stride. Mega should accept the truth about himself, and from there he can go about trying to better his spammy behavior.

Or not. I don't really care either way.

Whatever the case, it should be easy from here to make the deadline and avoid SHAME.

...I don't mind the occasional spam, even have fun with some of it. This renders the forums unusable, though (on an unrelated note, I wonder why the bot left this subforum alone, or how whoever authored it expects it ever to sell anything).

I guess we can just let it have the other subforums and keep the action here till Sev stops by

End Master
12-02-2010, 08:00 PM
I think Sev made it so nobody but him can make new threads in this sub-forum (After Apoth managed to create a new one) so I'm guessing not even the bot can bypass the lockdown on it.

mizal
12-03-2010, 09:50 AM
It's cool guys, we can just pretend the site's gone post-apocalyptic. Here we are, huddling in this old thread in a subforum that represents the last vestige of civilization and safety, while a marauding spambot wreaks havoc on the rest of the forum. One day the spambot will be gone and it will be safe to come out again. One day.

...oh and to top it off I can't log into the main site again. That represents the, uh, the electricity going out! Yeah! Don't worry though, we can still work on our stories here in the subforum. By candlelight. This is fun! ....yeah. :(

End Master
12-03-2010, 11:16 AM
Nice scenario, I like it. Sucks about the main site AGAIN.

This contest story is probably going to be my last story for awhile anyway. Just not enough time to do proper completed stories anymore and I don't like the trend I'm falling into with submitting uncompleted stuff. Granted if I probably set my sights lower in scope as far as size and shortened the writing I'd probably finish more stories, but eh I can't do it like that. (Besides I do that a little bit anyway and I still wind up with a shitload of writing per page.)

One day though AFTER I finally finish Primal AND Innkeeper (hope hope!) I'll start a new story. (Which will probably also take forever to finish)

EDIT: The main site seems to be working now, or at least it's working for me.

Same thing with Explorer and Opera....so, I dunno. It's not that big a deal though, I can just keep saving to Notepad for now and meanwhile it's got a month to magically fix itself.

Ryan_DuBois
12-05-2010, 12:06 AM
So... did you ever decide on a new deadline, End? It looks to me like I'll have to finish what I can of our story sometime over Christmas Break, but (as always) I'm in favor of a lengthy extension.

End Master
12-05-2010, 12:49 AM
Yeah I guess the new deadline can be what it was last year, January 16th.

This spambot is getting really ridiculous, the rest of the forums have 1 full page of spam now, except for the off topic forum which has nearly 4 pages of spam.

At this point the post apocalyptic scenario is looking less like The Terminator and more like The Matrix.

Crunchyfrog
12-05-2010, 03:26 AM
Jeez. Sev should appoint a moderator to get rid of all that stuff!

I guess all we can do is camp out here now. Yeah, I'd appreciate an extended deadline too... I have been struggling to finish another project before getting on to this one - probably a foolish decision, but I wanted to have a clear mind to give my IWT entry the best shot.

:o

mizal
12-05-2010, 01:44 PM
Tisk, tisk, sounds like we have procrastinators here. (Just so glad it's not me for once. :D)

I wouldn't mind an extension though, more time might let me add actual 'choose your own' elements to my adventure. I admit that right now there are a few more incidents of "Oh, you want to do something different? Well fuck you then, you're dead" than I'm really happy with.

Also, UPDATE on my logging in adventures: yesterday it worked for a little while, today it does not. Clearing or not clearing my cache and cookies doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect, thus, like I said, magic. It may seem completely random NOW, but I have a theory that if I burn just the right combination of leaves during a certain phase of the moon while putting on a puppet show with severenz dolls, it will let me in again! I'll let you all know how it goes.

Ryan_DuBois

Yes, I think when (and if) Sev comes back we should definitely ask him to give moderating privileges to someone who frequents the site at least once every couple weeks. Dragavan would probably be ideal, if he wanted to be a mod, since he seems to get in the fewest flame wars.

And, apart from LadyXAdmin, we could also get rid of that Megaman bot that's been spamming the site for years now.

Anyway.

Yeah, I procrastinated. During college I have an excuse: since I'm apparently not as smart as I thought I was in high school, I have to dedicate almost all of my spare time to reading textbooks/working on programs. And even then I'm only able to get like one or two As per semester.

But during my breaks I've also been taking it easy and hanging out with friends rather than writing. I just can't focus -- my head is too full of entertaining memes, I suspect. Viruses of the mind.

My only real goal is to get 20 rooms, though (although I'm hoping for around 40). After the contest, I think I'll continue (slowly) working on our story anyway, just so that I can say I'm still contributing to the site. I don't really want to enter next year, although I've been known to join just about every IWT that I'm around for.

Locke

Agreed, as to the need for a moderator (and Dragavan does have that DM experience to recommend him), but it could really be anyone these days. IS has calmed down considerably, I think (well, I grew up a little, and Ves left, as did MRH and Drums). Even Chubby seems slightly more sober. For awhile I thought we were rid of Megaman, too, but he's okay now. Kind of like a mascot.

I find it helps to call the circle together and sacrifice a goat to Severenz under the full moon. I'm not saying this will work for you, but I've had good luck with it whenever I try to log in. I burn printouts of his early announcements from the forum while I do this, chanting my pleas for access and spambot removal, hoping the ritual will appease him.

I've been thinking about that lately, too... All the excitement has really died down over the last one or two years. And yes, at this point I'd trust almost anyone who frequents as a moderator.

With the obvious exception of Megaman.

:)

Actually, I can see DEP or Chubby abusing it for their own amusement, too, but at least in their cases we'd get some entertainment out of the whole ordeal.

Sev said once he only really trusted Drag to be a mod, but Drag didn't want the job. Of course there was a lot more drama going on at that time, (In that very thread actually) and it is true things have become more peaceful since then.

I haven't even seen Drag log on here for a couple months now, I think he disappeared for other internet adventures. (or real ones)

Ves actually still lurks around here since her stories will sometimes disappear and reappear on the main story list every so often. She's also got Yazzman (Ryan?) listed as a new friend on her main site profile as well.

Ryan_DuBois
12-06-2010, 05:53 PM
Haha, I thought no one would notice. Very rarely do people pay attention to the friend list on the main site. But yeah, me and Ves ended up hooking up a couple weeks ago, so I thought it was only appropriate to add her as my "friend". Didn't want anyone to know, but apparently not even an innocent friend request can escape EndMaster's lidless eye.

Okay, not really. But I probably had some of you going, eh?

:D

Anyway, yeah, Ves and Shabti are both still hanging around on the main site. I haven't actually talked to them, but I got bored and sent out a bunch of friend requests to everyone a couple weeks ago, and (oddly enough) those two were the first ones to accept. Then again, pretty much everyone who leaves enjoys checking in on this site regularly (even I would read the forums every couple months or so during my absence, since they were so amusing), so I'm not all that surprised.

Hopefully they'll rejoin the forums someday. Also: I miss homerpython. We rarely saw eye-to-eye, but he DID try to defend me the time CelticFrostQueen threw a fit and got me banned. That was pretty nice of him. He's one of the few who actually might never return, though.

It actually wouldn't have surprised me if you'd hooked up with Ves, she is a "friendly" girl after all. (Ha ha)

Yeah, homer (or jeff) was okay. I thought his sense of humor was sort of odd though, since I never quite understood why he thought my Ebay story was the funniest thing ever, but hated Trash. Hell, I thought Ebay was so weak that I actually went back to support it with two funnier stories and renamed the thing.

Ryan_DuBois
12-07-2010, 12:23 AM
So I've heard.

;)

Yes, Homer/Jeff was a little odd. My best guess as to why he didn't like "Trash" would be the excessive swearing/sex/drug-use (not sure if there was actually any drug use, come to think of it, but I know the main character was a drunk). "Ebay" just had the swearing (at least for the most part). It always seemed to get on his nerves when people talked about the "dirtier" aspects of the world we live in, even though he kept telling us about... stuff we didn't necessarily want to hear.

Nice guy, though. Did he ever say why he was leaving?

[EDIT]

Oh my God! It's THE EYE!

End Master

I'd sort of understand that, but it doesn't really explain why he liked Chubby's Crack Attack though which was basically like Trash except with a crackhead protagonist rather than an alcoholic one.

Meh, like I said he was okay, but I just sort of found him a little inconsistent on certain things. Like he'd scold people for joking about sex stuff (claiming it drove away new forum members), then he'd make posts about how he jacked off A LOT. (And he wasn't joking about it either)

As for him leaving, I think one of his last posts was he was getting bored and he was going to write another novel. (He posted some short story he wrote on his website) Sort of figured he'd pop in again at some point, but I guess not.

I was gonna say... I feel like the moderator thing has come up before... Drag is the only one who really qualifies, but he doesn't want it. I don't remember much else about the issue, or how it all ended, but I do remember EndMaster modifying his avatar so that the word 'moderator' was written across the bottom.

And of course End still 'remembers' all of these things. I'm still convinced that he keeps a Word Document with all of our names in it, which he updates with all of our personal information so that he can keep track of it all. Whenever we throw out some random detail about ourselves in a random, off-topic thread? Boom, recorded for later use, in case it ever comes up again.

I don't often slip in real life details, but I'm pretty sure End knows my home state, possibly my home town, the time I posted my Halloween costume, and probably two or three other things I don't even remember saying, but which are true. But it's all good, I guess. Incidentally, my shoe size is a 10 1/2 Wide.

I'd forgotten about Jeff. I'd finally managed to repress him. I guess he was okay, but I just never liked him much. Most of his work had a lot of promise, but was ultimately too shallow to really be interesting, his personality was more chameleon than anything distinct... and he kept trying to champion really dumb causes. My favorite was, when we were making the map for DEP's fantasy thing, he kept insisting that my interpretation of Drevlin was wrong, even though I was the one that created it in the first place. And he kept trying to misquote my own words against me. Mostly, my memory of him is biased because of that incident. I mean, for fuck's sake...

Usoki: Yeah, I don't know. I just like the fact that he tried to help me stay on the site (so I'm biased the other way). Though I'd be first to agree that in some areas he might not have had... common sense? He used to always rate my stories less whenever I had a single "choice" linking two rooms, saying that I should always combine them into one.

And End... The man's mind was built for storing forum details (in particular, any juicy personal information that people let slip). No way I could remember all the stuff he does, and he's probably like 5 - 10 years older. Why does he do it? Well, this is just a hunch, but I'd say there's a fair chance that he's going to start picking us off one-by-one any day now.

Wait a second... So that's what happened to Jeff! He kept telling us everything about his personal life and it wasn't very long before End was able track him down! His "mom" probably picked him up from soccer practice one day and that was the end of him. Dear God.

Although we actually do have one piece of info against End in turn: his real name. Thank God Katie accidentally mentioned it, or we wouldn't even have that.

Actually, I think I know most people's names at this point:

End - Max
Apoth - Zach?
DEP - Ben?
Chubby - Jacob
Locke - Tom
Hi! My Name is: Katie - Not sure
Usoki - Not sure, but it's probably something sophisticated. Like "William". He seems like a William.
Xnull - Not sure
MRH - Michael
Cat2000 - Not sure
Crunchy - Not sure
Mizal - Not sure
Smeester - Not sure
Dragavan - Not sure
homerpython: Jeff
severenz - Not sure, but I know I've heard it before. I think it's only one syllable.
Ves - Not sure
Shabti - Not sure

Okay, never mind. I don't know as much as I thought I did.

Locke: It was way back in 2004 or 2005, when me and the original owner of the "YazZMaN" account were like 14. Megaman was around back then and (since the site was a lot smaller) he used to always send out PMs to the newcomers saying things like:

"hi your story was good but the swearing is bad. im 12 how old are you?"

Everyone knew he was trouble. Anyway, I got one of these PMs and I showed it to my good friend YazZ, since we had both already seen and laughed at his comments on peoples' stories. Around that time we had started a group in the old "Clan Section" of IS (but back then the site was known as "CYOA" for "Choose Your Own Adventure"). Can't remember all the details of our group, but YazZ thought it would be amusing to add the disclaimer:

"Absolutely no gays allowed under ANY circumstances!"

(To keep Megaman out, he said.)

We didn't think much of it. All I knew for like a year was that when I tried to get on IS, I kept getting directed to this blank page that said something like "Shape by Force" on it.

Over that year I kept getting ideas for the CYOA called "ExShin", and I wanted to write it really bad. Eventually, I came back to the site, but this time I used YazZ's account (since we knew each others' passwords and he didn't really come to the site after he stopped working on "When Zombies Attack"). It worked. I wrote "ExShin" and after DEP read it, he said it was good and that I should join the forums, so I did. It was fun. I had flame wars with just about everyone on the site back then, but it was a good community. Didn't write much after "ExShin".

So about a year or two down the road, EndMaster (I think). Dug up an old thread that showed CelticFrostQueen writing about how offensive me and YazZ's group was. Jeff tried to defend me, since I knew him a little bit at that point (from off the forums -- we rated each others stories a bit and discussed writing in general). It didn't work, though, since CFQ (along with NCPolice) was one of the unofficial "forum leaders" from back before I had joined. Of course, they probably were the best writers in their day, so it makes sense that they were role models for the young aspiring writers.

Anyway, Sev had banned me over it. That explained why I couldn't log on to my old account ("Karold") a few years earlier (YazZ didn't get banned because he was only a member the group -- Karold/I was listed as the group leader or whatever). To this day, I don't think he knows I'm not actually the real YazZ. I like to think he wouldn't mind, though.

How's that for a nice, boring bit of history?

:)

[EDIT]

Oh, and speaking of Drums... There's a quest in "Fallout: New Vegas" he would have liked...

Hey I can't help it, it's the archivist in me. That's pretty much what my real job consists of, keeping track of a bunch of obscure or pointless crap so I can find it for other people in the off chance that they need it for research or something.

Ryan: Lol, Katie's name is pretty obvious.

I forgot Xnull's name, but Apoth mentioned it in a thread somewhere in this very forum I believe. Shabti's mentioned his name on here before, forgot it too. I think he even linked to his myspace page once which gave a bunch of info. Sev's real name is on his other website I think.

I know Drag and Ves real names, but I won't mention them since they didn't volunteer the information for public release. At least I think I know Ves real name, she did seem sort of agitated and surprised when I mentioned it directly to her. Hey, not my fault she let it slip once in a chat!

Usoki's been about the only current long standing active forum member who has managed to keep his real name secret and not have anyone else let it slip. But he posted his pic on Halloween and I know he lives in Kansas so he's done for anyway. (I actually don't know his hometown so it'll still take awhile. Lol)

Speaking of banning, Chubby's the only person on here than managed to get himself banned on here several times due to his multiple account disorder. (And his "lovable" obnoxious behavior may have also played a part) How Megaman avoided getting banned I'll never know since he was pissing off people even back in the day when NCPolice, Celtic, KAG, Shabti and Sev were all frequent posters and active.

EDIT: Anyone else finding the spambot's advertisement titles a little amusingly contradictory at times? One moment it's trying to sell us viagra, next it's telling us how viagra causes heart attacks. Recently it's been trying to sell "healthy cigarettes".

Still surprised it hasn't started shilling sex toys yet though. After going through loans, savings, credit, gambling, prescription drugs, and cigs I'm sure the "Mr. Big Dick Cream" porn spam links will be showing up soon.

Earlier, it switched briefly from cigarettes to stop smoking aids and products to deal with the smoke odor. Probably, all the products interconnect in some convoluted way so that once you've bought a couple, the rest eventually follow in sequence.

It tried to sell "Kamasutra Contoured Condoms" ("super thin," cheap, and made in Mexico, no less) in its very first post, along with a number of age-related products (gabapentin, anti-wrinkle cream, menopause gum) for reasons I'm not going to guess at. I replied to the thread with some snark, which seems to have set it off.

I have to wonder why it's programmed with nonsense rather than coherent advertising, though, and those numbers (countless other spambots seem to use the same format). Obviously it's optimized to get search hits in some way, but I'm assuming there's also a monetary goal here.

I'm impressed that anyone knows Dragavan's real name.

Drag linked to several personal sites when he was discussing one of his tabletop games. To Endmaster, that's like begging to be stalked and murdered (notice how we haven't heard from him lately?). Additionally, his profile links to the other sites anyway, and a casual Google of his uncommon username turns up whatever he left out.

Katie straight up posted a visitor message asking "Where are you?" and he probably answered. I'm guessing End just printed out the address after that and showed up at his place.

Ryan_DuBois
12-07-2010, 11:27 PM

I've clicked on those links before, myself, but I didn't know Dragavan ever used his actual name on any of those sites.

Yeah, DEP sent out an e-mail once that ended up having his name on it- and I wanna say that Sev's name is Justin for some reason... but beyond that, nothing else jumps out at me.

Ryan, you're actually not far off... well, okay, that's not totally true... but I definitely don't have a 'hip', 'edgy' name. Go with a little less sophistication, and a little more uncommonly unique. Celebrities included, I can only think of about ten people with my name.

I'd say my ability to keep secrets is a combination of being shy, keeping to myself, and not having any real-life friends follow me to the site. Being easily mistaken for a middle-aged androgynous japanese midget in my early days probably helped.

Speaking of past members who I've forgotten about... LeBlanc.

Even during our most productive periods it's hard to recruit members for any kind of organized story (depending on how much you have done, some of us might be willing to contribute, though). Ryan_DuBois
12-08-2010, 06:53 PM
Cat is back on the main site. I just wrote her, so I think we'll know her plans for entering or not entering pretty soon.

Neon: This one ends on the 16th of January, but basically we hold it (roughly) once a year. The winner of every contest gets to choose the theme for next year (for example, End won last year and picked "Urban Fantasy", so now we're all writing about cities with mythological creatures running around in them and such; or something like that). Also, the winner gets to tweak the criteria for entering a little.

Anyone who wants to take the time to read the stories can rate them and all contestants are required to rate their opponents' stories.

I think that about sums it up. Anyway, I'd love to help out with your project, but I'm way to busy as of late. I think this contest will mark the end of my writing, at least until summer.

[EDIT]

Cat's not going to enter this one; her computer was overrun with viruses for a while, but it's working again. Blah. Don't know why I'm telling you this, since Cat2000 probably will herself.

I remember getting a PM from OMH once asking for cheese (and a related one from some other member, possibly also a Chubby clone, warning me not to give it to him), but the thread itself happened before I was active on the forums. I never minded MRH himself, but his chemistry with half the members was off (he clicked with Leblanc somehow though, which did unfortunately get old). Whatever happened with him on the old forum was (again) before my time, so I probably didn't get a lot of what went into his latest appearance.

I think Drums was my favorite troll.

EDIT: I tried to look up the old forum on archive.org just now, but I think the URL was different. Either that or I'm out of luck. Anyone remember?

Ryan_DuBois
12-20-2010, 07:46 AM
Yeah, I've tried to look them up on the Wayback Machine before, too. It used to work, but the best I could do the last time I used it was get into to the first couple pages of forum topics (and not see the actual posts themselves). It is still good for digging up a couple old stories that have been deleted/hidden, though. I swear I somehow managed to read Story X in either 2007 or 2008, although I can't remember how I did it. Not even sure if I used the Wayback Machine.

But yeah, most of those old forum pages are now hidden by that Shape By Force company or something.

For MichaelRayHolt, my biggest problem with him was that he was constantly nitpicking people about their grammar. If you mispelled one word or placed a comma in the wrong place, you could count on seeing a rant (or snide remark) about how stupid you were before the day was up. In other words, he was yet another former member who championed a dumb cause.

I always tried to argue with him that that whole point of good grammar is just so that people can understand your writing, and that as long as someone's grammar does that there's no point in having a fit about it. But he wouldn't listen.

:(

Oh, and he always posted long passages from The Bible here, said the Earth was at the center of the universe, and I think either Chubby or End once told me that he believed the Earth was flat. He came around and pissed off some more people while I was away from Infinite-Story, but I'm not sure exactly what happened there; I just know that Katie and End have a couple 1's from him on some of their higher-rated stories. So chances are that it was hilarious.

Seriously, talking about that fucktard MRH is the last thing anyone should be wasting their time doing while waiting out the spambot apocalypse. The guy just failed at life and had no redeeming qualities.

Ryan: Yeah it was pretty hilarious. He blew up and made himself look like an idiot as usual. If you want I'll tell you more in a PM since I'm sure everyone else here is mostly familar with the events already and the long standing stories of verbal insults between us is probably boring to everyone now (including me).

If we must talk about people who have a crappy past with most of the other forum members, at least talk about Ves. The girl was a drama queen no doubt, but she was at least amusing and made some worthwhile contributions to the forums and site in general.

Ryan_DuBois

As much as I hate to say anything good about MRH, he could write decent stories (with perfect grammar, of course). It was the forums and pretty much everything else where he was incompetent.

If you ever feel like writing some history in a PM, I won't say no to it, End, although I have a vague idea of what happened already.

Correction. He could write decent story openings. Never, at any point, did he ever progress a story past its opening sequence. Well, maybe once or twice, but still. He never really reached anything I would call a rising incident, let alone a climax. That was my biggest irritation. He had story ADD. He'd start one, talk about how awesome it was, write a few rooms, and then get bored with it and move on to the next story.

I never understood how he could have that much ego when he has so little to show for it. I mean, I don't have all that many great stories to my username, either, but at least I'm not trying to announce to the world that I'm the second coming of Shakespeare.

Checking in just to let you all know I'm still alive. I have been working on a story, but then I got ill over the weekend and slipped back out of it, though I do hope to get more of it done soon.

Two quick questions for everyone:

Is anyone else getting redirected to some "web ring" site when they go to the home page on the main? I can get around it if I link into my stories really quickly, but it could potentially become a pain in the ass.

Also, has anyone PMed or recieved a PM from Dreamshell? I'm considering letting him/her share my other account with King Malice, or we could give them the Sven account, assuming it's not another spambot. Actually, I'm almost sure that King's own account is working by now, so I'll give them mine.

[EDIT]

Looks like King's account might not be working yet after all; not sure why, though, since he was trying to get on the forums when Smeester and Crunchy were. Oh well.

I'll give my Sven account to whoever needs it. If you'll list the legitimate people who are trying to join right now though, we can just get Sev to okay them since he's going to be on the forum dealing with the bot anyway.

Had that happen once; no success trying to duplicate it. The site you mentioned is the webring IS belongs to; you can see it at the bottom of the main IS page, and it loads along with the rest of the content as part of the regular layout. It's not malware or anything, just some kind of glitch, I guess.

He is. I thought his actual account had gotten accepted since I saw it logged on a couple times, but now I can see that it's still not on the members list.

It's kind of odd that it didn't get verified, though, since Crunchy and Smeester were both trying to get on at the same time he was and they can both post now.

God dammit, Megaman! Why do you always have to play the hero?! Blindly sacrificing yourself for the benefit of others! What good is it? What good is it, really?!

I worry about you out there, always solving peoples' problems by critical thinking to come up with solutions they wouldn't have thought of otherwise! Jesus Christ. Messaging Sev. Never would have even crossed our primitive minds. It's a dangerous job, helping everyone like you do, but I suppose someone has to do it.

So just go! Go help the rest of the people on this planet who so desperately need your aid. But we won't forget you, Mega! We won't forget you!

That said, I'm kinda hoping the site is back up by the 16th so that we can have a nice traditional IWT finale. Seems kinda lonely setting up shop in this thread, especially considering all of the entries we have this time around -- probably around eight? I think that's the most contestants we've had so far.

Well, either way I'm excited. LOVED what I read of EndMaster and DEPs' stories thus far (which isn't very much at all, but still). I know Crunchy and Smeester are good writers, so I won't be dissapointed there. Usoki's probably been cranking something out, too. And if not, well that's one less opponent to worry about!

Actually it'd be nice if a bunch of of the people from the main site joined so that my story has something to look good next to by comparison. Always love those shitty entries that make everyone feel good about themselves (good thing Mizal entered).

I only kid, Mizal! I only kid!

(But seriously, it's on.)

Since the video games thread is buried, I might as well tell you that I beat the Red Dead expansion, End. It was good, and I can see what you mean about it being an example of how a zombie game "should" be done. I like the fact that they only had strength in large numbers and that you had to be precise with your shooting. I used the torch a shitload when I could, though. I'd just hit two of them, run till they died or got out of range, and repeat.

On the downside, the missions were scarce and it got somewhat repetative. Given that it was just an expansion, though, I still have to give it like an

8.5

I haven't even really played the actual Red Dead Redemption game yet. I've been playing "Uncharted 2" and "LittleBigPlanet", which are both pretty good, but they're PS3 exclusive. I usually don't get into platformers, but these are are both unique and "Uncharted 2" is a pretty cool action/cinematic experience. Well, it's corny, but it's exciting when you're actually in the action. "Metal Gear Solid 4" and really the whole series, remains at the top of my list in terms of action games with a good, interesting storyline, though.

Next games on my list, to be played over 2011:

- "Mortal Kombat" (the gore in this remake is so awful that I simply have to play it. Plus "Mortal Kombat 2" was the first game I ever played, so the two-dimensional games in the series have a place in my heart.)

- "Twisted Metal" (Of course I have to play this one; I used to have Sweet Tooth as my avatar for crying out loud! Looks like it focuses on multiplayer, though, which is disappointing since I'm only really competitive in "StarCraft 2".)

- "Metal Gear Solid Rising" (The physics look sweet, and I'm a big fan of the series.)

Oh, and for the XBox owners I tried out one of those Kinect things today, and it's way better than I expected. The technology is pretty impressive, since it can pick up even subtle movements. The only downsides are that there really aren't any good games for it yet, and you need a pretty big space to use it.

(I spent most of the day dancing in a small room with like eight people.)

Why, thank you for the faith! I totally have more than one-two rooms, depending on how short I cut things. I definitely haven't been looking at the word count of my previous works to see how lazy I can get.

And if not, well that's one less opponent to worry about!

...hey, wait!

Anyway, I figure that, if the forums are still spammy when the 16th rolls around, we can seize one of these other threads. Like the tap-tap thread, or something. It's not like we have to limit the whole forum to this one single thread. We've got twelve of them.

Also moving on to video games... I miss Little Big Planet. It was very sad when the PS3 roommate moved out. Holy crap is that game ever addicting. I collected 100% of the loot, and even managed to get the no-death on all of the stages. It was hard not to die on the final boss stage- but it was even harder not to die in the Mexico TNT levels. Anyway- super fun game. I loved it.

I admittedly haven't tried the Kinect, but I'm really not all that excited about it. For starters, it requires a huge amount of very well-lit space. And, frankly... video games, to me, are about laziness. The Wii is interactive enough- and all you really have to do is shake the remote a few times. I don't want to get any more physical than that. That's not why I play video games. I play them to relax, not to get all sweaty and gross.

ChubbyTeletubby

I know, right? It's like if I want to get all sweaty and gross I'll go have a sleepover at DEP's mom's. Even though there wont be much SLEEPING, if ya catch my drift!!!!

Get it? HAhahahaha!

No seriously though DEP's mom TOTALLY puts out if you're ever feeling lonely. And that goes for you too, katie. She swings both ways, if ya catch my drift. And she is a TOTAL freak. She will literally do ANYTHING for a twenty.

End Master
01-05-2011, 07:27 AM
We got a PS3 for cheap awhile back, but we still don't have many games for it. Katie tends to play a lot of Nintendo/Mario stuff so she plays more stuff on the Wii and I still prefer the games on the 360. (Not doing the Kinect thing though, one console with moving around is enough)

Little Big Planet was cool, Katie likes platformers like that more than I do though. She got ModNation Racer which is a lot harder than Mario Kart. You can't make a mistake at all, or you'll fall way behind and won't be able to catch up.

As for me, I haven't tried the Uncharted series yet, but I finally got around to playing some of the God of War games (1&2 collection) I can see why people like that series.

I'll also recommend INfamous for the PS3. I liked this one a lot and I'll definitely be getting the second one when it comes out. It's basically a super hero (or super villian) grand theft auto type game.

Demon Souls seemed like a game I'd be interested in, but ultimately I just got bored while playing it. Something about it just didn't grab me. If you're into difficult fights and dungeon crawling you might like it though.

Heavy Rain is called the next step in video games to not a game at all. I'd have to side more with the latter. It reminds me of a more complex version of "old school" Dragon's Lair where the entire game consisted of quick time events. Except in this case you don't necessarily die if you don't push a button or move the joystick a certain way, you just unfold the storyline in a different direction though there's still a lot of railroading.

It's basically an interactive movie or CYOA. Which wouldn't be all that bad except in this case the whole game hinges on this mystery which once you find out who the killer is (and you always will if you play from beginning to end), well that sort of defeats the purpose of repeat play throughs. Granted you could just do stuff to see every ending since there are quite a few, but eh, the characters aren't really compelling or likable enough to care about. (The killer is probably the best written character) I'm not really a fan of the whole quick time event multiple button mashing/joystick waggling stuff (It actually decreases my enjoyment of some of the God of War battles where it's mandatory) so I basically just watched Katie play it and after she mentioned she had no desire to play it again, the game went back.

EDIT: I propose seizing the "Forum Software upgraded..." thread to talk about contest stuff if we still have the spam flood by the 16th. That particular thread doesn't even have any other posts in it yet.

Ryan_DuBois
01-05-2011, 01:53 PM
Sweet! The site is fixed.

For now...

Yeah, I think what I like most about "LittleBigPlanet" is just the way the art/design is done. It definitely gets an A+ from me for creativity. The actual gameplay isn't what I'm used to, but I really liked some of the levels (the "Metal Gear Solid" bonus stages are my favorite so far). Haven't beat it yet, but I think I'm close.

And Chubby, you're gonna rate this year, right?! You OWE me from last year if I recall correctly. You owe me BIG!

[EDIT]

And yeah, I'm not a big fan of the "moving around" games, either, but the Kinect still impressed me somehow. I've always had this dream of fighting in a huge online virtual reality war game (perhaps a simulation of the Last Alliance battle from Lord of the Rings), so every time technology moves a little bit closer to getting us there, I get stoked.

And I don't really mind keeping myself in shape. It is a bit exhausting, but not too bad.

The bot doesn't seem to have stayed banned for long. "Current Activity: Creating Thread Off-Topic." Either the ban somehow prevents it from posting, though, or it's just taking awhile. It is the same user, evidenced by the join date and the "last 10 visitors to this page" frame, and not a new incarnation, I think. I can access its profile, but I'm restricted from viewing the "newest member" LadyX - an attribute of the clones we saw awhile back - which seems to support the above.

It appears, at least, to use just the one name, here and on a number of other sites. Can't "LadyX" just be censored via adminCP, so an account can't be created with that particular phrase? I know that's how some admins solved the "&#(00-99)" duplicate user glitch, which might be how we ended up with more than one in the first place.

Alternatively, assuming the above exploit isn't used or is prevented as noted, someone could simply grab the username immediately following the ban (if Sev has, as I assume, the option of deleting the account), so it gets stuck trying to register.

At least we've busted it back to "Literary Hack" for the time being.

EDIT: It seems to have logged off, so I guess it can't post.

Mega kept his members, though.

Hey, dreamshell here. Nice to be able to finally fucking post here (thanks to Locke for that). So, how I found out about this site is as follows;

After discovering that interactive stories existed online sometime ago thanks to CYS and a few other sites, I eventually came upon this one through reading Endmaster’s stuff and, liking what I saw, clicking a link he'd provided which led here.

After that I sort of left things alone, but having recently remembered enjoying this sort of thing and coming up with a few ideas I’m interested in seeing in CYOA form, I’m curious to see if I can write one for myself.

So, just making my presence known. I’d also like to say I’m a fan of Endmaster and donteatpoop. Both of you have put out some fun, detailed stories and I’m grateful for all the dark humor.

Perhaps someone should suggest to Sev to bestow administrative rights to someone, to approve the new signups and such.

We've been doing it at City of IF (http://www.cityofif.com/forum/index.php?sid=a88b1ed3215d7179551b6b03ecac3f94) since 2006 - having the populace vote every 6 months for whoever they think is most up to the job. In that time, (apart from a stretch of four or five months where one of our elected admins disappeared into thin air) the site has always had someone visiting regularly who can keep the membership and forums maintained.

I noticed that CYS is doing a similar thing right now. :)
