This one kind of snuck up on me. Apparently it's been around since 2005? I checked out the "last modified" section on a whim, and there it was. Has it been hanging out as a private story or something for two years? I'm expecting your usual morbid best, of course. I'm noticing some minor fantasy elements on the first page; is this your "From Hell" entry? I don't have time to get into it just now, but hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in a read of that and an entry for DEP's challenge on Friday. Ugh, what a week...

The "story" was created in 2005, but it wasn't Death Song. Most likely it was me messing around with a test story years ago that I ended up deleting all the rooms to and then deleting altogether. In fact if you look at date of the first room created, it's the same day as the "Last Modified" date.

I have like 5 "test stories" like that in my deleted files. Since I have all these old deleted test stories lying around taking up space, I figure I should get rid of them over time. So I usually use them for the contest stories since my contest stories never seem to get read that much anyway. Plus the "New Story" list is currently not updating so new stories aren't going to show up anyway so I figured it didn't matter if I used a deleted story.

is this your "From Hell" entry?

Yep.

I saw it too, but I haven't bothered reading it yet. I assumed it was the sequel to Necromancer, is that right?

Not really a sequel or prequel, but rather a story going on during the same course of events. It was the best way I could currently think of to handle a second story in the same timeline/universe.

The "True Path" in Necromancer is used as the foundation of Death Song and the events from that will "sync up", regardless of the path that is taken in Death Song.

It certainly kept my interest, though it is depressing that there is simply no way to "win". As to the "true path" of Necromancer - I preferred the endings in which you died that took place a few rooms before the end on the "grave" path, those being where you die with Catarina (especially that one), with your sister, and at the request of your mother (though given her desire to prevent death and knowledge of time, that you end up as the Great Lich Lord is odd). I dunno. I guess I'm just not cut out for genocide.

It'll probably win the contest though, unless someone else surprises me - not that you write at such length just to win something like that, unless you've got more spare time to kill than I realize. I haven't seen any of Vesnici's (where'd you come up with that name?) work though, nor much of Katie's (though what I've read is actually pretty good, if unfinished), and none from Chubby, who I wasn't around to see in his last incarnation (assuming they're all still entering). I've got so much on my plate right now I'm barely managing to add anything to Omni, so I won't enter this time around.

Anyway, according to the time the forum is displaying (my time, but off by 30 minutes? or official forum time? is there such a thing?) I finally have time to write for DEP's forum challenge (about an hour) but as nobody else seems to be participating and I haven't the time I need to make it really good, I suppose I'll just wait on the next one.

I did think about having at least one “happy” ending where your music allowed you to escape by opening up a portal to a different dimension or perhaps maybe even going back in time (like the Mother did) but then I changed my mind since I figured this being a “From Hell” story, there shouldn’t be something good like that, so I kept it hopeless.

The "best" you can do is live long enough to get the "Play one last song" ending.
