  • Drum roll please....

For the second year in a row, the winner of the Fifth Annual Writing Tournament is Vesnicie!

Her compelling yet disturbing work, Todestrieb, filled with unsettling autobiographical details and put together with some of the best writing this site has seen pushed her way ahead of the competition in the ratings.

    Second Place: Usoki's The Sneeze

    Third Place: Endmaster's Exploitation Theater

    Fourth Place: Xnull's Serial Rapist

Fifth Place: Whatever I would've entered had I entered the contest at all.

Everyone did great work. I think this may have been the best contest to date in terms of what it produced.

Now let us look at the numbers:

    Serial Rapist: 7.27
    Exploitation Theater: 7.77
    The Sneeze: 8.41
    Todestrieb: 9.46

I'll send everyone there individual ratings and comments over the next few days as I determine how to package them.

Hooray! I have to say honestly that I am very happy right now.

Todestrieb was challenging to write on many levels and probably the most personal thing I have created in a very long time. Thanks, Apoth, for your kind words and skillful number crunching!

Thanks also to all of my fellow competitors. I am very relieved to not have had a coronary in the shower just now. This is surely a testament to your skill. I really feel like the contest has been successfully revived this year and I really think that the renewed interest, plus Sev's site improvements, will make it an even bigger event in the future.

Finally, on a somewhat serious note, I want to recognize, and in some sense thank, all the fucked up aspects of life which have that unique ability to simultaneously injure the spirit and nourish its creative resistance. This is for everyone who has experienced trauma but is unwilling to disregard it in favor of the so-called "pleasurable" existence. It's for those who bear their scars proudly as testaments to their strength and growing wisdom.

I think I did about right where I was suppose to. I didn't put that much effort into it, and ignored the allegory theme totally (possibly even the porn theme as well depending on what you get off on), so I figured Usoki or Ves would win given their better attention span to the theme and effort.

Though Usoki used an underhanded tactic by putting brain jar sex in his story, which he had to have known was going to score him higher points by me.

Congratulations Ves! Now we can look forward to another serious, zombie bereft contest topic that will scare away everyone!

Aaand I finally rated your story on the site. A tad late but still smack bang in the middle of my exams. Feel flattered. Very flattered.

              Thanks, Munchkin!

But I have to say, if porn isn't the ultimate in populist appeal, then I just don't know what would be I might have to open it to a vote this year. Maybe.

Now off to check out that rating...

What did I tell you about pet names on the forums?

We-ell, writing good porn is hard. It's a thin line between crass erotica and purple euphemism fests. Not everyone's cup of tea. If I'd won I'd have chosen War as the topic.  :nudge: :nudge:

War? Aren't the forums war enough for you?

How disappointingly banal, Little Pet Name.

Is it any surprise, though? The only real question involved in the contest was the amount of points Ves thrashed us by. There's no doubt she deserved this win. I was eager to see if I'd win second- I knew I could not possibly hope to snag first. I wouldn't mind choosing next year's theme since she chose this last one, but... XD

Especially since the rest of us admitted we were loosely throwing things together, and then she went in and built a freakin' masterpiece.

Thank you, Usoki, you're always so gracious!

And don't worry about the topic. I will either open it up to a vote or come up with...

So does this mean Ves has officially taken DEP's place as "Fearless IS Leader"?

If so, it will now be her responsibility to motivate and recruit people for various writing activities and contests. She will also have to tirelessly struggle against apathy (in others and her own) towards such activities and contests.

It's a thankless job, good luck!

I've often found that the people who don't bother to be humble are the people you don't want to deal with. The amateur is confident in his skills, the master is humble. Look at what a fuck-up MRH is/was/will always be. And then look at someone like End. They've both been around the site for ages, and they both have stories coming out their ass. One member has a bunch of 10 room stubs, and the other has actual, complete works. And, lo and behold, one is infinitely more lovable than the other.

                              Congratulations to everyone.

I feel happy with my story even though it was voted the lowest. I feel like my story was an introduction to a story rather than anything close to complete. Unfortunately I didn't get to write up to the point of the story I really wanted to for the contest, nor did I even get far enough to satisfy the assumptions I wanted readers to garner from the title. I need a hole I can crawl in to have free time.

I'm looking forward to the feedback.
