Here is a proof of concept for you guys to play with. It uses AJAX technology to only update the room content when a choice is clicked. Simply replace the room_id with one of your choice:

There would still be some issues to work out - i.e. if you bookmark or do anything other than a choice you go back to "regular" room reading.
I would still need to leave the legacy reading style in place so that search engine spiders can see the whole story.
