  • Beer Thread

In an attempt to get conversation to going, most likely in vain, what is your beer or beers of choice? You can rate them based on how much money you have to spend.

If I have money: Magic Hat

If I have a little bit of money: Rolling Rock

If I have basically no money: Coors Light

From this you can probably tell that I'm in college and I like very little flavor in what I drink, because I'm going for quantity, not quality. I've tried strong, hoppy beers and they just don't do it for me.

Other's thoughts on beer? I feel like I've posted a thread like this before, but I'm too drunk to remember, so whatever.

    None...

I don't drink alcohol at all and if I ever chose to it would not be any form of beer... that stuff tastes foul.

If I have money: The world is my oyster. It's experimenting time. It's important during experimentations that you have a stand by readily available as well; and in that case I'd probably have some Allagash White Ale, some Stone Levitation Red Ale, some Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, some Victory Storm King Russian Imperial Stout, and some Great Lakes Elliot Ness... And if it's late spring/early summer then it is also the season for some mandatory Troegs Nugget Nectar.

If I have a little money: I'll be drinking Bohemia, a German Pilsner made in Mexico; during a brief German occupation of the area the Germans taught the people of the region the secrets to making good beer and honestly this is the best German Style Pilsner out there.

If I have even less money I'd be drinking Mooshead, Lowenbrau, or maybe Molsens... Also keeping an eye out for a good beer on sale.

And if I have basically no money, I'd be hitting up the liquor shelf in the basement where I have a little of this and a little of that left over. I refuse to drink certain beers, and all of them are american adjunct lagers. Fucking BMC.

Natural Ice tastes pretty awful, but it's so strong that you don't have to sit there and drink it forever, so that's one of my top contenders.

In my opinion, most beer tastes great, though. Kind of reminds me of iced tea. If I were to vote based on taste alone, I'd go with something like Miller Lite.

Miller Lite has a taste? I was not aware...

I drink Miller, Bud or Coors when I'm looking for essentially looking for alcoholic soda water, which is most of the time.

McGuire's Pub near my hometown is a microbrew and makes an excessively awesome stout. There are comparatively few microbrews here in Florida, so that's a huge plus; there are seasonal brews that sometimes turn out even better. It is my favorite beer, and if I have money (it is also expensive), I sit in with some friends and go a few rounds.

I like primarily stouts and pale ales (specifically, English old ales). I prefer draughts, but that's a social thing, and doesn't often seem to come together lately. If I'm going with bottled beer and have money, it's either some Old Engine Oil (stout) or London Pride (pale ale). In addition to London Pride, Fuller's also makes a stronger celebration ale called 1845, but I always have to order that in; it's for special occasions only, like the Partagas 160 cigar ($22). Young's Double Chocolate Stout is something I've an occasional yen for, too.

If I have a little money, I'm going with Yuengling Black & Tan or Sierra Nevada pale ale. I'll also drink the Yuengling lager at parties or with other people, since I find it tolerable and nobody really dislikes it. Those are the beers I buy if I hit up a convenience store.

If I have basically no money, I usually abstain. I don't find being more than a little buzzed fun anymore, so there's not much point in drinking something I'm not going to like the taste of. I'll drink light beer at parties to be sociable (Bud, Coors, Natty), but it's a lot like drinking water and that's really not about the beer. Coors or Rolling Rock are like water without that metallic taste, so they're more tolerable, but the parties I go to never have those.

As a rule, I dislike most pilsners. I heard good things about Troegs from somewhere, DEP, but have never seen it for sale here. On my ill-fated trip to see Chubby, I had a honey wheat beer I kind of liked, but can't remember the name of it for the life of me.

DEP posted a thread dealing with beer preference a year or two ago, but I really don't mind rehashing it. How about worst beers? My least favorites are Flemish sour ale (in general) and Mackeson Stout. Where Natty is on the badly flavored side of neutral, both of those I find actively disgusting.

EDIT (completely off topic): Was going over some old posts and noticed all of Ves's were edited to read "blah, blah, blah" sometime in May. Presumably severing any remaining ties? Even if she explained it, I doubt I'd understand the rationale.

I find Pabst Blue Ribbon to be utterly vile. If it is not ice cold, it is undrinkable.

Now, this one isn't the worst by any means, but in terms of most overrated, I would say Heineken. I use to drink it occasionally because I thought it was supposed to be good, but it is just shitty and over priced.

Has anyone ever mixed beer with anything? One of the things they do at college at least is mix a 30 pack of shitty beer with a handle or two of cheap vodka, a ton of lemonaid powder, and possibly sprite. The result is a vaguely sweet and sour frothy mix, that is generally kept in a recycling bin or garbage pail. For how disgusting it sounds, it is actually tolerable. I tend to avoid it primarily because people don't really clean out the containers well before they mix the "punch" in it.

Also, another question. Favorite beer that is sold in a 40 ounce bottle.

Well, you know. An unsweetened tea-like taste.

Like water with a little something else.

I'm also looking for essentially looking for alcoholic soda water, most of the time.

Gargage Can or Recycling Bin? Around here, it ends up in the Bathtub. The drain's right there, and it's super-easy to rinse out.

I've yet to find any sort of alcohol I can "do". All of the beers I've ever had were vile and foul- most were cheap, I'll admit, but a few were supposed to be of high calibur. A lot of the mixed drinks I've come across contain orange juice in some form or another, of which I am not even remotely a big fan. There's an electric blue lemonade thing at Chili's that I like, though I'm not entirely convinced it's worth the cost. Same with Mike's Hard Lemonade and Smirnoff Ice- if I want something that tastes like Sprite, I'll just drink some damn Sprite.

About the only thing I'll drink 100% of the time is Rum 'n Coke, and that's just because I'm a huge Coca Cola whore. Start me off with one shot mixed with a whole can, and then start increasing the rum amount as I get more drunk. Three shots is a good amount once I start calling it a "Rummy Cokey Thing"

I've drifted away from Rum and Coke's this year, but last year I was a huge fan. Especially Captain Morgan's spiced rum and coke, you can mix that really strong and it still tastes like vanilla coke.

I remember once, after I had been drinking for a while, I mixed a 20 ounce coke bottle about 40% 151 proof rum and 60% coke. I drank while walking to a concert on campus... by the time I got there, I had finished the coke, and I discovered I was too drunk to hear the music.

I ended up leaving early and calling xnull and for the next two hours explaining elaborately how I could apply the plot to the 5th season of The Wire in order to bring about the technological singularity. Surprisingly, he didn't hang up until I finished.

As far as mixing beer with anything goes, I've had a few stout floats that were pretty good.

Stouts are great in chilli too.

IPAs or Whits are great to be used in place of yeast in bread recipes.

I tend to add a bit of beer to what I'm cooking if it fits, a little pilsner to a mexican dish, pales to marinades, etc.

Locke; don't judge all pilsners from what you've had. Have some Bohemia; it'll change your opinion of the style.

Usucki, get yourself a summer wheat ale next summer. See if you still feel the same way. Wheats are the one beer that can be infused with fruit and not taste bad. Summer wheats tend to have lemony tastes and the yeast tends to take on a banana like character.

                        Summer wheats are great!

Okay, as far as beer goes...

Anything straight from the brewery. I was lucky enough to live down the street from a brewery there in Colorado and could fill up a gallon jug for $5. Usually I went for this honey wheat beer, which I believe is what I let Locke try.

The best beer I ever had was served in that brewery as well. They have a laid back little bar, right there in the brewery. I tried this mix of Belgium Trippel/Barley wine that was OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious. Not to mention like 10% alcohol!

It cost $10 a cup but it was well worth it.

I like all beer, except watery domestic. Lagers are my least favorite. It's hard to tell which one I like the most, 'cause I'm always experimenting. Um, Newcastle brown is always good. And there's this other British beer I like, too.

If I'm going for cheap, I'm going bang for the buck. Steel Reserve 211 puts hair on your balls with it's 8.1% alcohol by volume. On top of the fact it costs between $6-9 a twelve pack.

It tastes like horse piss. Not watery horse piss. Thick horse piss.

One of my mixed drinks is simply bourbon/whiskey (preferably Jameson or Crown Royal) mixed with ice tea and honey on ice.

                        MmmmmMMMMM! Good.

Tequila, chased with lime and vodka, mixed with anything, are typical stand-bys. I drink just about anything, though. But I do have pretty good tastes when it comes to beer and liquor.

I really can't understand it when people with money to spare squander their hard earned dollar on domestics like Miller and Budweiser.

They should be shot. They really should.

Although, if pressed, I'll take miller over budweiser. Although I might as well be drinking water, either way.

Usually I look for something that looks pretty quaffable that's on sale. And DEP was right about those German/mexican brews. They're greeeeeeat!
