I've been interested in the sport for the past few years, but over the past six months I've become an avid fan. It's funny because I've always hated sports, but now that I'm really into one I finally understand how others feel about their respective sport.

Anyone else into Mixed Martial Arts? UFC? TUF? Strikeforce?

I've got a couple friends back home who are into all that UFC stuff (they've both been in kickboxing for about a year now) and once in a while we do "backyard fighting". Mostly just a mix of kickboxing, wrestling, and jujitsu (they focus on submission rather than strikes, at least for right now -- it would suck going to work or school with bruises all over your face).

I'm taking a taekwondo class right now, and though I don't really care for it by itself, there's a couple neat techniques we'll end up incorporating into our fights.

Yeah, I'm purely a spectator in the case of the sport. If I did practice it however, even after putting on some muscle, I'd be in the light weight division even though I'm 6 3' and have pretty long reach. That would be interesting...

Hah, but yeah, Karate was all but dead until Lyoto Machida. He breathed new life into it by showing that it can actually be used effectively.

Oh, heh. For some reason I thought you were actually doing MMA. I don't watch UFC or anything, myself (though one of my friends watches it faithfully, buys the XBox games, reads book on martial arts, etc.), but fighting for submissions is way more fun than I thought it would be.

We used to box once in a while, but I didn't care for that (primarily since you get punched in the face). Jujitsu-type stuff is definitely easier to handle, since you can always tap out; at the most, you wind up getting a sore neck or leg or something. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to get in shape.

A lot of people watch MMA around here (specifically, UFC), and particularly as it often comes up in conversation, I started watching it recently and did develop an appreciation of the sport. I'm actually just about to watch the second Griffin/Ortiz match, which I missed initially.
