  • See, my roommate made me watch The Wrestler, and I hated it for the exact same reasons. It's gritty and real, which makes the entire film seem pointless. It's a random string of events leading up to a conclusion that cops out early, without exploring any of the emotions that had been building up. It's so realistic that it's a bit boring. Without any of the Hollywood Glamor, it feels like a slow, bland soap opera.

I wouldn't consider seeing it again, but it wasn't so bad that I absolutely had to stop watching it. I'd give it a 2, personally.

The other movie he made watch was just as artsy and weird, but I liked it a lot better. It was artsy, but not in a modern, minimalist way. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a musical/rock opera about a gay/trans boy in East Berlin. He gets married to escape, but he has to undergo genderswap surgery so it can be legal. It gets botched, and he winds up sexless, but identifying as a woman. She winds up in Kansas, divorced, and falls in love with a Christian boy who has absolutely no idea what to think of her. They form a band, get successful, and he ditches her, steals her songs, and becomes famous without giving her credit. The movie is about her band as she explains her backstory, seeks revenge against the boy, and tries to come to terms with her confused sense of self. Catchy music with odd lyrics, and very sexually awkward scenes. The many performances allows Hedwig ample opportunities to hump and cuddle all sorts of unwitting bar-goers, let alone the actual romantic scenes.

I wouldn't call it a "masterpiece of the gay/trans conflict using divided Germany as a beatiful metaphor about the search of self" as my roommate insists that it is...but it's still not bad. It's worth a look. I'd give it at least an 8.

And it's embarrassing when you make any noise at all.

    • Yeah, I can see that (although I wouldn't call the events random by any means; they all seemed to grow out of each other naturally). A few years ago, I probably would have felt the same way, even. I don't know why, but nowadays I prefer my entertainment to be more "unrefined". Probably because I'm more interested in characters than plot.

      • Just got back from watching Star Trek. It was pretty decent, much better than I originally anticipated when I heard they were making another Star Trek movie. It was a compromise that it wasn't too deep that it would lose any audience and not too violent or sexual so it would lose conservative and young audience members. Being a compromise to reach the biggest audience it can, it, couldn't be amazing for anyone, but it provided a pretty good viewing experience for most people. A very utilitarian flick, and well cast.

        • A double post, but Terminator Salvation is a major disappointment. It is a very "cool" movie with sweet effects, but unless you are a mental midget who can suspend virtually all disbelief, you will be disappointed. I mean, I realize a time travel killer robot movie is not going to be realistic but I feel like they could have done better with minimal effort. Also, the fact that the entire moral message was the power of the human heart and how it is limitless unlike machines is trite and retarded.

          • I second that.

The human heart is what seperates us from machines? What the hell? I'm not even sure if they're using the word "heart" figuratively, either. Either way, it's stupid.

That being said, I thought the plot was okay. I liked how the machines were whooping ass, just as they would in real life. Actors were okay, too. Christian Bale is a good actor, but it seemed to me like he was trying to talk like Batman during the whole film. Lame.

The special effects, though, are probably the best I've seen in a movie. Seriously, it felt like I was at back Universal Studios. I had an adrenaline rush during the whole film.

            Get's a 7.7

            Mostly for the special effects.

            • Saw Up. Like most Disney movies, it was pretty damned good. Not like The Lion King good, though. Still good, nonetheless. Very good.

                • I really want to see up, but all my female friends have seen it and if I go to see it with a dude that would be too gay, and if I saw it alone that would just be horribly depressing.

I finally got around to seeing Wall-E, and I loved it. I know its a Pixar flick, but it is totally worth watching.

Also, saw Pickpocket. It's very short, but worth watching, even if you traditionally aren't a film of the older black and white films.

                  • Didn't you know, Chubby? All the cool people watch Disney movies nowadays. Actually, all the cool people have been watching Disney movies for decades. Disney (and my genetic coding) made me into who I am today! Seriously, Disney taught me like 90% of the things I know about morality and life.

                    Disney.

And I read all about you and Ariel.

I actually saw this one with my ma. Which is also depressing. Probably more depressing than seeing it alone, actually.

                    But that's what I done.

                    Soon's I get me a chance, I'm watching Wall-E, too.

[EDIT] And this "Ryab" character obviosly knows where it's at.

                    • Why is going to the theater alone depressing? Or is it just going to see Disney movies alone depressing? (You know because you look creepy going to a kids movie by yourself)

Going to the theater with your mom isn't necessarily depressing depending on the movie and the reasons why you're seeing it with her.

                      • Yeah it depends on the movie I suppose. Definitely in the case of a Disney movie, some tall strange man with a goatee sitting alone in the back of the theater just seems socially uncouth. Not that I know anything about social rules or graces.

I believe the term is "Ahh! Stranger Danger! Stranger Danger! Mommy! Wahh!"

The movie was Up and I was seeing it with her because I was bored.

Heh, I actually was planning on going alone since I didn't want to ask any of my friends to come (for obvious reasons), but I knew Mom wanted to see it too, so I figured it was a good chance to spend quality time together.
