See, my roommate made me watch The Wrestler, and I hated it for the exact same reasons. It's gritty and real, which makes the entire film seem pointless. It's a random string of events leading up to a conclusion that cops out early, without exploring any of the emotions that had been building up. It's so realistic that it's a bit boring. Without any of the Hollywood Glamor, it feels like a slow, bland soap opera.
I wouldn't consider seeing it again, but it wasn't so bad that I absolutely had to stop watching it. I'd give it a 2, personally.
The other movie he made watch was just as artsy and weird, but I liked it a lot better. It was artsy, but not in a modern, minimalist way. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a musical/rock opera about a gay/trans boy in East Berlin. He gets married to escape, but he has to undergo genderswap surgery so it can be legal. It gets botched, and he winds up sexless, but identifying as a woman. She winds up in Kansas, divorced, and falls in love with a Christian boy who has absolutely no idea what to think of her. They form a band, get successful, and he ditches her, steals her songs, and becomes famous without giving her credit. The movie is about her band as she explains her backstory, seeks revenge against the boy, and tries to come to terms with her confused sense of self. Catchy music with odd lyrics, and very sexually awkward scenes. The many performances allows Hedwig ample opportunities to hump and cuddle all sorts of unwitting bar-goers, let alone the actual romantic scenes.
I wouldn't call it a "masterpiece of the gay/trans conflict using divided Germany as a beatiful metaphor about the search of self" as my roommate insists that it is...but it's still not bad. It's worth a look. I'd give it at least an 8.
